Grand Canyon on a Whim

After our big 4th of July adventure, we decided to stay the night and visit the Grand Canyon, as we were quite close.  But.  We had not packed a single item for an overnight trip.  Not one.  It was only to be a day trip.  So we made a plan of attack and ran to Walmart for some cheap shirts from the clearance rack.  We hit the dollar store for some toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, a brush, some mascara (for Miss B and I) and a few other tidbits.  It was a jolly good spur-of-the-moment type adventure.  The next morning, we headed to the Grand Canyon, hiked, enjoyed the view, drove along the canyon's edge, almost had a heart attack (well just me) because of Q's propensity for crazy antics and lack of fear in dangerous situations, had a picnic in the forest, watched a bird soar over the Grand Canyon and visited the Watchtower (a very cool lookout tower built in the 30's).  The Watchtower was really great and we were all glad we drove the extra miles to visit it.  Miss B and I especially enjoyed it as we could finally get more perspective of the giant canyon.  It is so huge and massive that I always feel a little overwhelmed and just want to see the bottom.  From the height of the Watchtower, you can see the river or use one of the telescopes to really get a feel for the enormity of it all.  I highly recommend a visit.

  1. I do believe I will never, in all my life ever, be able to visit the grand canyon with my children. You are one brave mom! So fun to see you again, if only for a tiny little bit. As always, it's never enough.

  3. Love the spontaneity! The view from the tower was awesome. We all enjoyed it last year. The kids thought it was great scaring me to death that entire week. They still laugh about how scared of the canyon I was. ;) Must be a mom thing.

  5. You're boys are wearing pants!? I don't know if you know much about the weather down there, but pants are a no-no in such hot weather!

    1. Yes. We didn't pack any clothes because we weren't planning on a spontaneous excursion and had been in the mountains for the 4th of July, so we were wearing pants...and just bought new shirts. Luckily it was very very nice with lovely breezes and the like!
